Fire & Ice fest features ice cream & salsa contest

My apologies if you tried to find this column in last week’s paper. We quickly planned an “emergency” family trip during my dad’s stay in rehab in deep East Texas. (My dad, 93, is home now.) And, just when I reached the time I had set aside for putting together a column, my mom’s elderly dog died.

A beautiful memory from that trip got put together on Sunday morning. My sister and I surprised my mom (86) by showing up in her Sunday school class. With all she had going on, Mama put in her normal many hours of preparation to teach, with calm assurance and deep faith that God is in control.

I shared a photo on Facebook and a friend noticed her well-worn Bible.

Don’t be surprised by a weather or civil emergency. Sign up for the Hays County Emergency Notification Network. http://alertregistration.com/capcog. The form collects email addresses, home phone and cell phones for the purpose of sending emergency alerts.

That’s yet another tidbit to share with new neighbors.

The information sheet I give to our new neighbors includes information about our city council. There’s not a “set date” for the monthly meeting. Dates are set based on the schedules of the members of the council.

This month, the published date got changed at the last minute for lack of a quorum. Mayor Tiffany Curnutt mentioned, “Sometimes these things come up and for a city of our size I think it’s quite impressive that this is the first time this has happened in over five years. But we will do our best to prevent it in the future.”

The next council meeting is now scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in city hall.

Mountain Citians have a very special calendar date to notice this month:

Saturday, Oct. 25, enjoy Fire and Ice (salsa and ice cream competition with entertainment by local band, Island Texas).

Please consider preparing salsa (Fire) or ice cream (Ice) for the competition. The competition is much more fun when neighbors warm up to the idea of entering. There’s no fee to enter.

Watch for a mailing from Loving Mountain City. It includes an invite, information on the 4–7 p.m. “shop local” (free registration), a sign-up form for the competition, and an order form for hamburgers and hot dogs.

For questions about the event, email lovingmountaincity@gmail.com

Too, watch for emails from Loving Mountain City for details. If you do not have email, ask a neighbor to print the details for you. That’s what neighbors are for, right?

If you run into a snag finding a neighbor, RonTom will be your print-out-the-details neighbor. Our phone number is (512) 268-5678.
