Looking ahead in Hays CISD football: Sept. 10, 2014

Hays (0-2) vs. Lake Travis (1-1)

When: Friday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Bob Shelton Stadium

Last meeting (2006): Hays 35, Lake Travis 14

Last week: Georgetown 49, Hays 40; Lake Travis 47, Copperas Cove 16

Players to watch:

Hays: QB Braeden Kent, RB Cody Gandy, RB Jackson Effiom, WR Brandon Hunter, WR Grayson Rigsby, WR Austin Maulding, LB Emory Cuzze, DL Johnson Elrod, OL Connor Lanfear, OL Mateo Mendoza, DB Joseph Rubio, DB Garrett Quinn

Lake Travis: QB Charlie Brewer, WR Grant Foster, DB James Bailey, DB Chris Roller, RB Abe Willows, WR Hudson Fife, WR Cade Green

Outlook: The ability to tally 40 points last week was a huge step forward for Hays. It’s pivotal when you consider the offense could be the Rebels’ best defense against Lake Travis. Continued progression between Kent and his wide outs is a critical component. Gandy’s resurgence will help keep the Rebel offense balanced. It’s the defense that could prove problematic for the Rebels. In two games, Hays gave up 93 points and an average of 471 yards per game. That poses issues for Hays, which must find a way to slow down Brewer. So far, he has thrown for over 600 yards and five scores. The big question is whether Cavalier QB Dominic De Lira will play. He hasn’t due to an off-the-field issue. Regardless of who’s out there, the priority will be discipline in the secondary. This matchup could see a total of 100 points scored. But if the Rebels can match last week’s effort, they may avoid their first 0-3 start since 2009.

Lehman (0-2) at Bowie (1-1)

When: Friday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: The Toney Burger Activity Center (3200 Jones Road, Austin, Texas)

Last meeting: First ever

Last week: McCallum 49, Lehman 42 (OT), Bowie 40, San Antonio Madison 14

Players to watch:

Lehman: QB Jeremy Schilhab, RB/DB Brett Wagner, RB Jameson Castillo, WR Jon Herrera, WR Jay Sayles, RB/DB JR Torres, DL Eutquio Mondragon, DB Jacob Tamez, DB Austin Lakey, LB Kacey Santos, OL Julian Silguero

Bowie: QB Preston Wheeler, RB Cole Myers, WR Reagan Shaw, WR Ben Setterquist, WR Josh Wainright, DB Zach Velasquez, LB Chris Alanis, LB Cruz Lopez

Outlook: The Lehman Lobos seemingly overcame the issue of putting points on the board last week. Keeping other teams from scoring points is a completely different matter. But for the Lobos, that big step forward is pivotal, especially with district play starting Friday against Bowie. Efforts from Castillo and Wagner will keep the passing game thriving for Schilhab. Distributing the ball through the air effectively will be a crucial point moving forward. It’s going to have to happen against a stifling Bowie defense. That group has allowed only 28 total points in two games. On the defensive side, Lehman will transition from defending a power running team to a pass attack. Wheeler has 425 yards and five scores so far this year.
