Press release:
Hays CISD will break ground on a $29.5 million elementary school in the 2,400-acre Sunfield master-planned community located in the south Austin suburb of Buda, Texas.
The 121,200 square foot school will include a two-story structure with site parking and improvements, including all mechanical, electrical, plumbing and general construction work, which will be complete in time for the 2022 school year.
The passage of Hays Consolidated Independent School District’s Proposition A in the May 1, 2021 bond election means part of the bond’s $147.9 million will be earmarked toward development of the new school.
According to a Hays CISD spokesperson, a citizen’s committee will gather school name suggestions from the community and make recommendations to the district’s Board of Trustees in fall, 2021. Sunfield’s families are currently served by Hays CISD’s Tom Green Elementary School, McCormick Middle School and Johnson High School.
Scarborough Lane Development broke ground on the MPC in 2008, with the first lots selling in 2010. Since then, more than 2,600 lots have been developed, with 2,000 more in the planning stages or under construction. At full build-out, Sunfield has the potential for 6,900 homes, according to Scarborough Lane Development’s President and CEO, James Feagin.
“Overall, the south Austin suburbs along Interstate 35 have been experiencing explosive population growth, leading to a need for additional schools and facilities,” Feagin said.
He went on to say that, with education a major decision-making factor among potential homeowners, the Proposition A bond passage is timely.
“We’re grateful to the voters for approving the funds, and to Hays CISD for placing the new elementary school in Sunfield,” Feagin said. “We’re delighted to offer this additional educational amenity to our current and future residents.”
