The Hays Rebel baseball team remained undefeated in district play with a thrilling 5-4 win over the Alamo Heights Mules Friday night at Rebel field.
As has become their habit, the Rebs trailed 4-3 into the bottom of the sixth when Justin Montana, following an Adrian Acosta single and a walk to J.C. Cerda, hit a long fly ball to left centerfield that the wind held up just enough for the Heights outfielder to misplay and allow both runs to score and post the Rebels to the 5-4 lead. Tyler Woodmansee then pitched a strong seventh to ensure the Rebel victory.
Starter Alec Swofford was masterful for three innings giving the Rebs a chance to build a three run lead with a Nate Scott single, a Justin Diaz double and Acosta’s 2 run home run. Swofford ran into trouble in the fourth when the Mules surrounded an error and a walk with a pair of singles and a double to push across their only four runs. Reliever Woodmansee entered with two outs and shut the door on the Mules for the rest of the way, giving up only two hits while allowing no runs and earning the win.
Acosta led the offensive way for the Rebs with the big home run and a single. Alex Robles also added a pair of hits to the cause. The Rebs have won 12 of their last 13 and are now 14-4 on the year and 5-0 in District 27 AAAA.
The win over Heights followed a last inning rally against Boerne Champion on Tuesday to garner a 6-4 win. The Rebels play the cross-town rival Lehman Lobos at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rebel field.
