Summer math camps accepting applicants
The Mathworks program at Texas State University is now accepting applications for its 2013 summer math programs. These programs engage students in doing in-depth mathematics, focusing on the whys and hows to prepare students to be problem-solvers. Three programs are available: Half-day junior camp for students in fourth-eighth grades, residential junior camp for sixth-eighth grades and a residential honors camp for high school students. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Interested students may apply online at www.txstate.edu/mathworks.
Texas public schools need $1 billion
The Associated Press is reporting that the Texas Education Agency’s Chief Financial Officer, Shirley Beaulieu, said Monday that the agency will request an additional $1 billion in funding for public school districts to make their July expense payments. Beaulieu was testifying in front of state District Judge John Dietz at the school finance trial in Austin, which resumed after a three-week break for the holidays. Equity Center lawyer Rick Gray, representing many of the 600 schools involved in suing the state, said, “The system as a whole is in bigger trouble than even we thought,” according to the AP.
