Lobos squeak past Lions 1-0

by ROBERT WHITMER

On Tuesday night the Lehman Lobos baseball team defeated the Lockhart Lions 1-0.  The Lobos evened up their record at 13-13 for the season and 2-2 in district with the win, keeping the momentum towards a playoff position.

The flags, unlike the previous home games, were falling limp as the Lehman Lobos took the field against the visiting Lockhart Lions.  The weather was as ideal as it could get for the middle of March in central Texas with a game time temperature in the mid-70s.  Hunter Lehman took to the mound looking for another win for the Lobos and he was as close to unhittable as possible.

Hunter pitched a complete game four hitter Tuesday, which would end up being the key to the game.  Masterful on the mound, Hunter struck out nine Lions while only walking one on 95 pitches.  Neither team mounted any offence as the Lions never got a runner past second base.  Hunter finished off the game in the 7th inning with a quick thinking play on a ball back up the middle.

The Lions pitching was also almost unhittable as the visiting pitcher gave up two hits and struck out eight.  The lone run in the game was in the bottom of the 5th inning when Lobo Ben Flores was able to get to first on a dropped strike three.  He then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Penney and a single by Xavier Soliz.  Runners were at the corners with 1 out and Jacob Urea came up to bat.  Flores scored on the following wild pitch and that was the difference maker in the game.

The Lobos face Schertz Clemens on Friday.
