Recent Hays graduate dies in wreck

by ANDY SEVILLA

An early morning fatal car wreck near the Hays-Travis county line claimed the life of a 19-year-old Buda man last Thursday.

Matthew Steen was pronounced dead at the scene after the silver 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck he was riding in swerved suddenly to the right, leaving the roadway, causing it to rollover several times shortly after 4 a.m., according to an Austin Police Department (APD) preliminary investigation.

The identity of the driver has not been released, as no charges have been filed.

An APD news release states that both the driver and Steen were wearing seatbelts as they traveled northbound on Interstate 35, just past FM 1327 near Creedmoor. The female driver was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the release.

Steen was a 2011 graduate of Hays High School. A memorial will be held for him at Harrell Funeral Home in Kyle at 2 p.m. Jan. 12.

This was Austin’s third fatality of 2013.
