Christmas contest needs guru

Help! I need help with detailing and carrying out plans for the 2013 Mountain City Christmas Décor Contest. Planners will meet this weekend (October 26th or 27th); and, the group will need helpers for installing signs, nominating, and more.

Most of all, we need an electronic ballot (through a system that’s “free”, since no budget money is available) that residents of Mountain City can access to vote on December 13th and 14th. With the new Nomination Nights (December 9th & 10th) system, a much-more-simple ballot will be created (one way or another) with just a few nominees for each award, rather than every-house-eligible-for-each award with everyone voting (which made for a mind-boggling 20 kagillion possibilities).

If this guru (developer?) will also create an electronic ballot for the nominators who take the first look at lights and decor, that would be delightful.

The Christmas Décor Contest will be enhanced and simplified if a volunteer will produce an electronic map of Mountain City that shows each house address.

To volunteer, please contact me at [email protected] or phone 512 268 5678.

Did you read the article about Mike Kelley in last week’s edition of the Free Press? What tremendous help Mike provides through the Red Cross Disaster Action Team and the Mass Care Action Team. If you missed it, search www.haysfreepress.com for “Mike Kelley”.

Some in Mountain City are causing problems at the recycling trailer.

In August, Mayor Tiffany Curnutt sent word, “We love our recycling Trailer… and we love that Charlie and Kevin Johnson are kind enough to take the responsibility of managing the dump process for us on an as needed basis… and we want to keep them!  So let’s make a little more effort on keeping the recycling trailer area cleaned up and making sure that ALL items are removed from plastic bags and sacks prior to putting them in the trailer and that you break down boxes to allow for more recyclables.”

Walkers report that many in Mountain City put cardboard boxes and other recyclables out with trash. Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling is easy now for Mountain Cityians.  Is there a reason you are not recycling?  Do you have comments about the recycling bin?  Send word through the City’s website, www.mountaincitytx.com

The recycling trailer accepts paper, recyclable plastic (1 and 2), cardboard, aluminum, and “tin” cans. But, as Mayor Tiffany emphasized, do not include plastic bags. Plastic bags jam the recycling machinery.

HEB provides in-store recycling for plastic bags, produce bags, newspaper sleeves, outer wrap, 6-pack rings, and dry cleaning bags. As with the Mountain City recycling trailer, compacting yours keeps space available for others’. Roll about 50 plastic bags from the bottom up to the handles and tie at either end with a plastic bag. At HEB Plus in Kyle, the bin will reappear on November 1st, after the completion of the remodel.

Jack Brown accepts plastic bags and coat hangers.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

And, never waste a tidbit, please. Submit to [email protected] or 512-268-5678

Thanks! Love, Pauline
