Kyle is well on its way to stamping its mark along the I-35 corridor and with continued growth and the addition of a community college; businesses are rolling in and setting up shop.
This year, 28 businesses have opened in Kyle as of Oct. 22, and 14 are either under construction, in the permitting process or having their plans reviewed by the city.
“New businesses are always a wonderful thing!” said Kyle Economic Development Director Diana Blank. “We are working to fill the gap in convenience and availability of services, amenities and goods, which in turn grow new tax revenues contributing to quality of place and a lessened burden on residents.”

Among the newly opened businesses in Kyle there are restaurants, residential developments, retail, gyms, a car wash, a convenience store, car rental, professional offices and at least nine medical sector establishments among other commercial offerings.
Kyle Parkway at I-35 has been the city’s commercial Mecca with new businesses continuously popping up and filling the empty pad sites. Chicken Express, which boasts 169 locations in Texas and offers chicken, catfish, tea and desserts, among many other items, is presently under construction at the corner of Physicians Way and the I-35 access road. Bank of America is also under construction and will front FM 1626.

The Austin Community College (ACC) at FM 1626 and Kohler’s Crossing will open soon and begin offering classes this spring. City officials have been largely vocal in anticipating much commercial growth near the college campus as students will begin to flood the already well traveled intersection.
Kyle council members have also directed city staff to continue discussions and negotiations with the Lone Star Rail District (LSTAR), which is proposing a nearly 120-mile rail that would connect south San Antonio north to Georgetown and could have a train stop station next to the new ACC campus.
To bring a station to Kyle, LSTAR is seeking 50 percent of Kyle’s property and sales tax growth within a half-mile radius of the station. Rail representatives have said the train stop would generate new tax growth that would have otherwise not made its way into Kyle.
Plum Creek developers have said that if council members approve moving forward with LSTAR, they would ask the city to rezone their property surrounding the proposed station to better fit the growth commuter rail could attract. Presently the property is zoned light industrial.
