Ewen M. Garner (1925-2013)


Ewen M. Garner,88, born January 20, 1925, passed away April 2, 2013, at Seton Medical Center in Kyle. Ewen served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII, from 1943 to 1945. He was trained at the naval base at Farragut, Idaho, and was then sent to operate a water purification facility for the Naval Air Station at French Frigate Shoals. Thereafter, he worked as a fireman in Walla Walla, Washington, until he joined the Air Force and served an additional 18 years, being stationed variously in Japan, Okinawa, Montana, and Ontario. During this time, he was a regular member of base pistol teams, being a Master Shooter with the military caliber 45 pistol. After retiring from the Air Force in 1970, he went on to another career as a long haul independent truck driver. He was a skilled water facility operator, electrician, fire fighter, pistol shot, missile man, and big rig driver.


He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Norma; five children: Stephen, Ronald, David, Susan and Gary. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren; sister, Lola, and brother, Richard. Ewen lived in Kyle since 2004, where he enjoyed dominoes and barbeque right up to the end. The family wishes to thank Hospice of San Marcos for the many hours spent making Ewen comfortable. His ashes will be interred with the family plot in Echo, Oregon.
