The fishing pole is quiet, the car is parked. No more Hill Country day jaunts. Glenwood Merritt Emerson, 81 of Kyle, left this life to begin the next on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Spending time in the great outdoors was one of his most favorite things to do, whether it was “day-tripping” to Blanco State Park for a leisurely day of fishing or Inks Lake for fishing, swimming or just relaxing, he was there!
The next love of his life was spending time with his family, especially visiting with his great-grandkids, who he so enjoyed watching grow. His one and only grandson called him “Poppy” so naturally they called him “Great-Poppy”! He also loved his pets through the years, most recently his border collie, Tippy, who was only three years old when he fell in June and passed away of what was probably a broken heart when he didn’t return home.
Glenwood Merritt Emerson was born in Bangor, Maine. He graduated high school and received his Associate Degree on a GI Bill years later. Glenwood was in the United States Air Force for 20 years, where it took him to Alaska, California, Vermont, Hawaii, Texas, Alaska (again!) and New York. He also worked for the United States Postal Service in Austin, as a carrier for five years, the Internal Revenue Service as a tax examiner for eight years, and retired in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Emerson; mother, Gladys Emerson and four brothers. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia Irene Morris Emerson; daughters, Kathy Vermillion and husband Marvin of Kyle, Lois Hornaday and husband Wayne of Springfield, Oregon; son, Bill Emerson of Austin; grandson, Eddie Vermillion and wife Jenny; great-granddaughter, Josi Vermillion; great-grandson, Malachi and nephew, Danny Emerson of Maine.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Harrell Funeral Home in Kyle where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 10. Interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery in Austin.
