Favoritism. Some residents of our northern Hays County community routinely accuse the Hays Free Press of favoring Hays High School over Lehman High School. We hear claims that we only report on Lehman High School when “bad” things happen.
Yet, over the past seven years, this newspaper has reported on both positive and not-so-positive happenings at both high schools – in fact, on Hays CISD as a whole.
Just in the past several years, we covered hundreds of varsity sporting events at both schools, along with theater productions, Shattered Dreams, Cinderella’s Closet, the Rebel flag controversy, the young men who streaked the football field during the rivalry game, foreign exchange students, the teens who wrote a racial slur on a teacher’s door and destroyed school property, along with countless photos of students engaging in a wide variety of activities including field days, science projects and special events. We bring you news from the school board and from the legislature.
That’s what we do – we report on local news that affects you. Sometimes, it’s not great news – murder, rape, assaults and theft. At other times, it’s happy news, such as a new business opening or a short story contest winner. We offer stories about taxes, elections and county business. We cover what happens right here, keeping you up to date on the news that matters.
The only favoritism we claim is that we favor local news. Since 1903, the Hays Free Press has been the leading newspaper in northern Hays County.
We appreciate your readership and look forward to continuing to bring you local news for many years to come.
