Rock the Porch art initiative gets rocking in Plum Creek

Submitted Report

This summer, the Plum Creek neighborhood organization is launching a public art initiative called “Rock the Porch.” The project is similar to the Cow Parade of Chicago and Guitar Town in Austin – on a more local scale.

Plum Creek will launch this initiative at the neighborhood’s annual Front Porch Days, a two-day celebration on May 4- 5 featuring family-friendly, summer fun activities in the neighborhood.

Plum Creek will be accepting applications from Kyle-area artists and individuals who would like to participate in “Rock the Porch.” The neighborhood looking is for people or groups with a creative streak to create unique (maybe even a little weird) rocking chairs that reflect the community surrounding them.

Applications can be from anyone in the area – Kyle, Buda, even San Marcos. The organization hopes to recruit local celebrities/personalities (mayors, council members, school board members) as well as creative individuals, students, community groups and businesses in the area to participate by creating a chair.

This initiative is an opportunity for local Hays area creative types to showcase their talent and beautify Kyle.

Once completed, though, the chairs will be distributed in areas around Plum Creek and Kyle. We have yet to finalize the Kyle-area locations – possible locations may include Seton Medical Center Hays, the Kyle library, City Hall, Lake Kyle, etc. While Front Porch Days is a Plum Creek event, people from all around the area attend. Past years’ counts have been around 500-600 people.

At the event, an example rocking chair will be on display along with a booth where festivalgoers may donate funds and decorate kid-sized rocking chairs. The proceeds from the chair-decorating booth will benefit Kyle charity Hope and Love for Kids.

Prospective artists should submit applications for Rock the Porch along with a sample of his or her artwork. Applications and samples should be sent to [email protected] by 5 p.m. on May 10.
