Buda library hosts summer essay-writing contest

The Friends of the Buda Library is once again hosting a Summer Essay Writing Contest for our younger library patrons. It’s another great opportunity to flex your writing muscles and show off your imagination and literary skills.

The contest is open to all Buda Library cardholders between the ages of 8 and 18, living in Hays County. The essay contest is co-sponsored by the Buda Public Library. There will be two age divisions: child, ages 8-12, and youth, ages 13-18. Entrants will submit an essay of 500 words or less. First place winners in both divisions will be awarded $100.

Each division will write essays inspired by the prompt given below for that division.  (The “prompts” will not count in the word total for the essays.)

Entries will be judged based on the quality of the writing, originality and subject matter. Finalists will be judged by local writers, teachers and librarians.

All essays must be received by August 1, 2013.

To submit entries by email, copy into the body of your email and send it to [email protected]. Emails with attachments will not be accepted.

To submit entries by mail, send to: Friends of the Buda Library Essay Contest, P.O. Box 1162, Buda Texas 78610.

Entries will also be accepted in person at the Buda Public Library at 303 Main Street, Buda, Texas.

Kathy Luckett, Lea Ahmed and Pam Nelson will run the contest committee.

All prize winners will be announced August 12 on the Friends of the Buda Library and Buda Public Library web sites and in the Hays Free Press. Winners will be individually notified.

The Friends of the Buda Library will award $100 for the first place essays, $50 for the second place and $25 for the third place in both divisions. The first place essays will also be published in the Hays Free Press.

All entrants in the ages 8-12 division will receive an invitation to the awards program at 5:30 p.m. August 12 in the Nolan Kunkel Room at Buda Elementary School Upper Campus. Teen winners will be announced at their awards ceremony at 5 p.m. on August 9 in the same room. It is not necessary to be present to win.

Entry guidelines are available at the Buda Public Library and at www.friendsofthebudalibrary.org
