Two World War II veterans, Roy Martinez and Donald Smith, both of San Marcos, were among 25 Central Texas residents on an Honor Flight last Friday. They flew to Washington, D.C. to visit the National WWII Memorial. Honor Flights fly WWII vets at no cost courtesy of Southwest Airlines. Their send off included an escort by the TSA Honor Guard and the Austin Police Department Bag Pipes and Drum Corps. A brief ceremony at Gate 11 of Austin Bergstrom International Airport included the national anthem. As the plane carrying the former soldiers taxied to the runway, the vets received a water cannon salute from the Austin Fire Department’s Aircraft Firefighting and Rescue division. Martinez and Smith spent several hours touring the memorial honoring fallen soldiers from WWII.
