Getting the holiday break rust off – that was the goal for Hays High head girls’ soccer coach Danny Preuss, as the Rebels defeated New Braunfels 41-29 on the road on Saturday. Hays hosts Schertz Clemens on New Year’s Eve at 3:30 p.m.
Prior to Saturday’s game, Hays’ last action was against Lockhart on Nov. 20.
Hays shook off some of the oxidation, as Hays senior Jordyne Dugger led with 16 points, while junior Alexis Delgado had eight.

Preuss complimented Dugger, whom he said came through with several big buckets and free throws.
He also praised the play of Delgado, whose strength lies on the defensive side of the ball.
“Alexis plays good defense, but she was offensive minded [on Saturday],” Preuss said.
Senior guard Courtney Lord also played a pivotal role, according to Preuss. She was able to hold down Lady Unicorn leading scorer senior Amanda Fuquay to only seven points.
Hays now readies for the heart of the district schedule. It starts with Clemens, which will be coming off a weekend tournament in Waco.
While Clemens had more time to shake off the holiday rust, Preuss felt the team would be prepared.
“[Clemens] got more rust off than we did,” he said. “But we’ll be okay.”
