Kanetzky re-elected to school board seat

Marty Kanetzky

STAFF REPORT

Marty Kanetzky will keep her post on the Hays CISD Board of Trustees District 5, thanks to 300 voters.

About six percent of the 8,512 eligible voters cast a ballot for the Hays CISD Board of Trustees District 5 seat in the recent election.

According to Joyce Cowen, the Hays County Elections Administrator, 525 voters participated in early voting or on Election Day. Of those, 300 voted for Kanetzky with 138 in early voting and 161 on Election Day.

Her challenger, Debbie Muñoz, garnered 197 votes – 88 in early voting and 109 on Election Day.

The remaining 28 “undervoted,” Cowan said, meaning they voted for something, for example the Kyle road bond, but not the school board election. Cowan said undervoting is common when voters aren’t familiar with candidates.

Muñoz received about 100 fewer votes than the incumbent, despite outspending Kanetzky by more than $1,463.

According to the candidate’s campaign finance reports, Muñoz spent money on palm cards, door hangers, sponsorship and booth rental at Plum Creek’s Front Porch Days and other non-itemized expenses.

Kanetzky’s campaign finance report shows $751.122 in expenditures for web hosting and domain name to GoDaddy.com.

Kanetzky said she has never accepted campaign contributions. Muñoz, on the other hand, reported raising $2,934 during the election cycle, according to her finance reports.
