James “Jim” Steven Kortan, 72 of Buda, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013. He was a firefighter in the black hills of South Dakota. Then he moved to Kansas where he joined Salina Police Dept. He then became a gunner in the U.S. Army and served in Viet Nam. When he moved to Austin he served with the Travis County Sheriff’s Dept. before becoming an Austin Police Officer, where he retired as Sgt. in Robbery and Homicide in 1998.
Preceded in death by mother Gertrude Mehlhaff Kortan and Steven J. Kortan.
He is survived by beloved wife of 12 years Penny Kortan and son Steve (Stephanie) Jones of Washington State and sister Karen (Al) Riker of Irving, TX. Other children Michael (Anita) Kortan, Tami Martin, Cinda & Debra Kortan and several grandchildren.
Funeral service were held Friday, May 10, 2013 at Harrell Funeral Home in Austin. Honorary pallbearers were Steve Jones, Mark Riker, Steven Riker, Jimmy Brown, Curtis King, Ben Wright, Joe Hebert & Tom Crowe.
