I am sick today. That is the reason I have time to write this letter. Like most conservative folks I spend my time working, taking care of my family, and shaking my head at the at the silliness that goes on around us. Last week a senior at Hays high school was booted off the varsity football team. I don’t know what other punishment he received. Dove season had opened over the weekend and the senior varsity athlete had enjoyed opening day, he had also left his shotgun in his pick-up truck. It was discovered when he returned to school. Schools are “gun- free” zones (and we all know how safe gun free zones are). I have been a pro-gun advocate for many years and often tire providing rational, calm explanations to those who react irrationally to the mere presence of a firearm. The shotgun in the athlete’s truck posed a threat to no one. A person acting evilly has to operate that weapon to cause harm – this varsity athlete is not evil. I do not know what the gun laws were in the early 80’s. I do remember being in the school parking lot after lunch one September day. Dove season had just started, and we were crowded around my friend’s pick-up truck admiring his new shotgun. The art teacher was standing there with us, and he liked it too.
