Kyle sets sales tax revenue record as businesses roll in

by ANDY SEVILLA

Kyle’s sales tax collections in fiscal year 2013 have consecutively surpassed records of recent years past, and the first and second quarter totals have seen double-digit spikes compared to last year.

The increased revenue is due, in part, to the 38 businesses that opened up shop last year within the city; and since Jan. 1, at least ten new businesses have rolled out the carpet. Meanwhile, 16 commercial establishments are presently under construction, city officials say.

Of the 38 new businesses that opened their doors last year, 11 were in the medical sector and ten were restaurants. This year, thus far, four medical sector businesses, one restaurant/bar, a hair salon, a car rental, a gun store, a concrete/coating business and a professional office have opened in Kyle, according to Building Permit Coordinator Susan Hajek.

As more businesses come into the city, sales tax revenues also increase. This month, Kyle received $413,729.92 in sales tax collections, a 12.33 percent increase from the May 2012 figure, State Comptroller records show.

Kyle’s financial gains began a solid stride early in FY2013, with first-quarter numbers – October, November and December sales tax collections – reaching $969,633.64, a 15.22 percent increase from FY2012’s first-quarter figure.

And continuing that trend, the second-quarter in FY2013 – January, February and March sales tax collections – brought in $1,001,855.61, a 16 percent increase from the same reporting period in FY2012.

Kyle’s FY2013 began on Oct. 1, 2012.

In her February State of the City Address, Kyle Mayor Lucy Johnson said FY2012 brought in $3.5 million in sales tax collections, which was a 12.2 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. The first two quarters of FY2013 have brought in almost $2 million, setting the stage to potentially top FY2012’s sales tax collections.
