Don’t toss that envelope from Loving Mountain City. It includes all the info for the Sept. 21 Fire & Ice Festival including an order form for picnic meals and (free) registration form for “Fire” (salsa, picante, pico) and “Ice” (ice cream, sherbet, sorbet).
Send the forms to Amy Hilton by Saturday, Aug. 14.
The envelope also includes a “Save The Date” reminder for National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Once again, Mountain City’s observance takes place at the home of Beth and Everett Smith on Cedar.

Mountain City had quite a neighbors’ event at the Wilbur’s estate sale on Labor Day weekend. Long waiting lines at the entrance and exit produced engaging conversations. One neighbor voiced the thoughts of many: “How awesome that Phil’s and Adele’s standard of excellence will continue to enhance and enrich the lives of friends and neighbors who had the opportunity to purchase fine merchandise connected to good memories.”
On July 4th, after the Annual Parade and Lawnmower Races, Mayor Tiffany Curnutt unveiled a lovely engraved award for Phil, after word came that The Wilburs would be downsizing and moving away from Mountain City. “With our deepest appreciation we hereby present Mr. Phil Wilbur with this award in recognition for his ongoing commitment and dedicated service to the city of Mountain City.”
There would be no way to estimate the number of volunteer hours Phil poured into Mountain City, which started before the city incorporated in 1984. Phil actually spearheaded the incorporation, which gave the expanding city of Austin no possibility of annexing our subdivision. Even after he left the city council, Phil continued service and influence.

Our city elections from this point forward will be in November, rather than May. The city inadvertently failed to file the paperwork on time early in the year for the May election. So, now we can (theoretically) vote for a mayor and aldermen in November. That sounds nice, doesn’t it? Of course, nearly always the election is cancelled because of no opposition.

Did you see the results of the Dumpster Days survey posted on the city’s website, www.mountaincitytx.com? Hats off to Mountain Cityians! Almost 70 percent said they want to volunteer to help next time.
No one who participated in the survey said that they have never, ever dumped during Dumpster Days.

Mountain Cityians raved on Facebook pages about the rain this past week. In one 24-hour period many rain gauges recorded 1.3 inches. Wow, the greening in just a few days’ time. Praise God.

Did you see that the Texas Legislature inadvertently helped us out by banning Homeowners Associations from disallowing drought resistant landscaping or water-conserving lawns? All wells around here drink from the same aquifer.
And, motorists are now allowed to show an officer proof of insurance on a cellphone rather than producing proof on paper.
