Kyle VFW to recognize Vietnam soldier

Members of the Kyle VFW Post will recognize Alfredo Lopez, Jr., a Kyle resident who died in Vietnam in 1968 five months after his tour of duty began. The service will begin at 9 a.m. Memorial Day.  Kyle council member David Wilson recognized Lopez for his service as part of the Memorial Day Proclamation at the May 14 council meeting.


American Legion San Marcos

The American Legion San Marcos Post 144 is holding a ceremony at the San Marcos City Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25. The city cemetery is on Old RR 12. The Legion also sponsor Boy Scout Troops who place flags this date on veteran’s graves in seven area cemeteries.


City of San Marcos  

On Memorial Day, the City of San Marcos is sponsoring a memorial program at the Hays County Veterans Memorial on Hopkins Street across from the San Marcos Activity Center. This event begins at 10 a.m.


Team Red, White and Blue

CrossFit Kyle will hold a special workout at 10 a.m. Memorial Day. Owner Bud Boehnke, a military veteran, is an ambassador for Team Red, White, and Blue. The organization aims to help veterans assimilate into civilian life through fitness and exercise. Attendees are welcome to stay for a BBQ after the workout.


Buda and Kyle Fire Departments’ high noon cookoff

Members of the Buda and Kyle Fire Departments will show off their firehouse cooking skills at high noon on Memorial Day at the H-E-B Kyle. The teams met last year and Buda took the trophy. This year, Kyle will fight to earn the title. The Kyle AMVETS will also enter a team into the competition.


Memorial Day Service at State Cemetery in Austin honors veterans

The Memorial Day service honors all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service for the United States of America. Sponsored by the Thankful Hubbard Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) the Patrick Henry Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), this special Memorial Day Service started in 1981.

Beginning at 9:40 a.m. on May 27, music will be played and sung by Gary Knippa and The Friends. This local band is known for their renditions of favorite Americana music, hymns and folk songs. The memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. at the State Cemetery, located at 909 Navasota at East 7th St in Austin. Lt Gen Steven R. Polk, (retired), Inspector General of the Air Force, will be the featured speaker.

Seating is provided for elderly and mobility impaired people, all others are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. This service is open to all who wish to attend.
