New student expulsion policy

The Hays CISD Board of Trustees Monday adopted a new policy governing student expulsion hearings and appeals. Previously, student expulsions were handled through the use of FNG (local) Student Rights and Responsibilities: Parent Complaints/Grievances. The district’s legal advisory recommended separating the student grievance process from the student expulsion process by adopting a local policy for student expulsions. The new policy is FOD (Local) and will be available in the district’s online policy menu soon. A draft version is available online in the Nov. 18 board meeting agenda book.

Board supports vote centers

The Hays CISD board adopted a resolution to establish two precincts within Single-Member District 5 to clarify which polling location voters must use on Election Day. The resolution also offered support to creating vote centers, which function much the same way as early voting, but they are open on Election Day. With these centers, voters can cast their ballots on election day at any open polling location. Before Hays CISD can use vote centers, they must first be adopted county-wide and approved by state election officials.

Board goals adopted

During the past several months, Hays CISD Board of Trustees members and the superintendent participated in workshops to develop the 2014 board and superintendent goals, identified based on high priority items. The board adopted those goals Monday they are:

1. Develop a system to monitor and assess student growth

2. Use routine risk assessments and audits to determine the priorities for further system review and improvement

3. Improve collaboration between students, parents, staff and community

4. Make student-centered decisions

5. Recruit and retain a highly qualified and diverse staff.
