Entering his first foray into spring workouts at Hays, football coach Neil La Hue understood how tough a coaching transition could be, especially following the success of Blake Feldt, who left for the greener pastures of Odessa Permian.

Yet, La Hue soldiered on during the spring workout session, culminating in a quasi-scrimmage/workout in the final week of May.

Despite the change in the playbook, players appear receptive toward La Hue’s style – an up-tempo, high-energy offense reminiscent of the previous regime.

La Hue praised his players’ ability to learn the nuances of the offense and progress during the spring.

“They are exactly where I though they would be,” he said. “They are hardworking kids.”

La Hue expressed his desire to incorporate the popular “pistol” formation in the Rebel playbook; something he used during his time at San Antonio Roosevelt.

“We went to pistol [formation] over the last couple of years [at Roosevelt]. It cleans up protection issues and it keeps teams off balance,” La Hue said.

Finding a replacement for Caleb Kimbro on offense will be the focus of summer workouts.

“Quarterbacks have the hardest transition. They have the most to learn,” La Hue said. “However, they have all done a good job of picking it up.”

On defense, a new coordinator is on the horizon, but players seem eager to work hard prior to the arrival of the new defensive coach.

“It is a little difficult to grasp hold of all the new plays,” said Cole Camey, junior defensive lineman. “You try to learn as quick as you can on learning the new signals on the field.”
