Eric Norman Lund, 92, went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2013, in Austin, Texas, surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Galveston, Texas on April 7, 1921, to Erik Balling Lund and Louise Albertina Holmes. “Norman” lived in Orange and Sugarland, Texas, however, Galveston was his permanent home. He attended Galveston schools and graduated from Ball High in 1939 where he played baseball and was captain of the football team. He was a member of the 1938 American Legion State Championship baseball team, the Rattlesnakes. He married his childhood sweetheart, Evelyn Griffin, on January 15, 1940 and together they had two daughters, Diane in 1948 and Nancy in 1952.
Norman joined the Army Air Corp in 1943 and trained navigators while in the service. He continued in the Air Force reserve and retired as a Major. Norman spent his working career at Union Carbide and Carbon Chemicals in Texas City in the maintenance and safety departments where he retired after 40 years. Norman was an avid fisherman, a carpenter (building both of the family homes), and a dedicated lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church. At Zion he served as a board member and participated in numerous fundraisers and maintenance of the property. Norman enjoyed taking family vacations, visiting family in California and old Army Air Corp buddies around the country. Norman and Evelyn spent their retirement years with family, traveling to their Colorado cabin and cruising.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Erik and Louise Lund, his wife, Evelyn Griffin Lund, his brothers Bolling and Raymond Lund of California, and his sister Evelyn Wolf of Galveston.
Norman is survived by his daughters, Diane Lund Patterson of Kingwood; Nancy Lund Shelton and husband, Jerry, of Kyle; grandchildren, Lewanna Shelton Campbell and husband, Jason of Kyle; Amy Shelton Sierra of Kyle; Kristin Patterson McLaughlin and husband, Robert of Humble; and Douglas Patterson and wife, Kristin, of Galveston. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Cody, Dakota, and Elijah Campbell, Sydney Sierra, Kora, Isaac and Alayna McLaughlin, and Matthew and Zachary Patterson. Norman will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home in Galveston from 5-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with a graveside service following at Hayes Grace Memorial Park in Santa Fe, TX.
