Hays High’s Lady Rebels defeated the Lockhart Lions in three sets Friday, winning by 7 points or more in each set.
Hays took the first set 25-11, the second 25-18 and the last set 25-5. The Lady Rebels are 24-13 are overall and 5-1 away. They are 6-3 in district play.
“We’ve played Lockhart before, so we kind of knew what to expect,” said sophomore right-side hitter Sundara Chinn. “We never really underestimate our teams, but I just have the same mindset every game, which is focus on what I do best that is adjust to the sets and do what I do in practice.”
Chinn contributed seven of the team’s 32 kills on the match, coming second only to senior hitter Sydney Paradeaux who had 10 kills. Chinn had the highest hitting percentage on the match at .462 with only one error on the night.
Senior middle blocker Melanie Harrington had 5 aces on the night over her 15 total serves, compared to her one kill in the previous match’s Boerne-Champion loss.
“(We had a problem) maintaining focus,” said Hays volleyball head coach Erica Walthers. “One of our focuses, especially in that second game that was a little bit tighter, we were making some errors and getting a little sloppy, and just making sure we kept our level of play up.”
The team had three serving errors, 15 attacking errors and no serve receiving errors, blocking errors or digging errors.
Walther said they were going to work on “everything” before Tuesday’s match against Alamo Heights.
But last night, the Hays Lady Rebels fell to state ranked Alamo Heights in straight sets. Senior Sydney Paradeaux led the team with 12 kills on the night. Hays drops to 6-4 in 27-4A play this season.
