Hays (4-2, 2-1) vs. Schertz Clemens (6-0, 3-0)
When: Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bob Shelton Stadium
Last week: Hays def. Lockhart 38-37 in 2OT; Schertz Clemens def. Seguin 24-13
Last meeting (2012): Hays def. Clemens 42-7
Hays offense: Multiple
Hays defense: 3-4
Clemens offense: Multiple
Clemens defense: 4-3
Players to watch:
Hays: QB Jeff Jordan, QB/WR Hayden Cagle, RB Dylan Kasper, RB Cody Gandy, WR Luke Park, WR Ty Goebler TE Banner Steele, DL Cole Carney, DL Justin Diaz, LB Hector (Trey) Solis, DB Emory Cuzze, DB Jared Self, DB Mason Salinas
Clemens: QB J.J. Elkins, RB Krisitan Carmona, RB Jeremy Collins, RB Kameron Baker, WR Brett Walker, WR Chase Foreman, DB Darien Newbill, DB Yijah Hawkins, LB Kaleb Hill
Intangibles: After an emotional win over Lockhart, Hays must quickly turnaround for what may be the biggest game of the season. They take on a surprisingly unbeaten Clemens team that leads 27-4A. Clemens’ strength has been their defense, which has given up only 34 total points – the fewest in 27-4A. Hays will need continued support from their run game to crack the Clemens defense. That group rebounded against Lockhart for 260 yards, led by RB Gandy, Kasper and Park. A consistent, varied pass attack will also be necessary. Ultimately, success depends on Hays’ ability to limit turnovers. The Rebel defense faces another huge task, as they try to halt a run-based Clemens offense. Four Buffaloes share run duties, led by RB Carmona, who has 299 yards with six touchdowns. QB Elkins provides another threat, as he has been consistent. Elkins has thrown for 12 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions, holding a 66 percent completion rating. Friday’s game is of high importance for Hays, as they face off against the top three teams in 27-4A over the next four weeks. Should Hays win out, they could claim their third straight district title. It must start with a win over Clemens.
Lehman (1-5, 0-3) vs. Seguin (3-3, 0-3)
When: Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bob Shelton Stadium
Last week: Alamo Heights def. Lehman 42-35; Schertz Clemens def. Seguin 24-13
Last meeting (2012): Seguin def. Lehman 40-21
Lehman offense: Multiple
Lehman defense: 4-3
Seguin offense: Spread
Seguin defense: 4-3
Players to watch:
Lehman: QB Jeremy Schilhab, RB Paul Brown, WR/LB Tyler Hyss, WR/DB John Herrera, OL/DL Derick Chavarria, OL/DL Andrew Davila, WR/DB Malcolm Turner, WR/DB Kelton Powell
Seguin: QB Walker Franz, RB Colton Applewhite, RB Joe Baker, WR Henry Young, WR Sheldon Whitson, WR Geovani Watson, RB/DB Trevor Kilcrease, TE/LB Emilio Light
Intangibles: Last week’s near-upset of Alamo Heights may signal
future success for the Lehman Lobos. However, injuries are mounting as the Lobos enter the latter part of district play. Despite that issue, Lehman’s offense torched Heights for 355 total yards – 285 on the ground. QB Schlihab as well as WRs Hyss and Turner were instrumental in maintaining offensive momentum. They’ll need to maintain consistency on that front. Throwing the football more will be necessary. Look for WR Herrera to be a key cog. Overall, the Lobo offense faces a tough task, as Seguin’s defense gives up an average of 365 total yards per game. Still, Lehman has proven they can score points – but can they stop anyone? That’s the big question, as the Lobos have allowed 400+ total yards and 30+ points in five of their six games this year. The big play has hurt Lehman, especially last week. They’ll need to limit big plays against a balanced Seguin offense, led by QB Franz, who’s thrown for over 1,000-yards and RB Applewhite with over 800 rushing yards. Lehman has the offense, but they need defense to win. The Lobos wish to earn their first ever playoff berth. With a little help, they still have a slim chance, but it has to start on Friday with a win.
