It’s summer! Time for the kids to kick back, relax and just chill out for a few months, right?
Well, not exactly. If students don’t keep reading and thinking, the summer slide can steal months’ worth of learning.
What is this infamous and dastardly summer slide?
When kids and teens don’t keep their brains working over the summer, they can lose up to two months of learning, which then has to be retaught in an already loaded school schedule. This has been proven true for all socioeconomic groups of students, but it is especially prevalent in low-income students, whose parents may not have the time or resources to keep working with them over the summer or take them on enriching trips to museums and such.
How can we fight off this villain?
Keeping kids reading over the summer is a great way to keep students’ brains active. The Buda Public Library’s Summer Reading Clubs are a good way to keep children and teens motivated to read. Even reluctant or discouraged readers are able to benefit from this program, which offers prizes for each reading log that is turned in. This also helps students get in the habit of reading. This habit gets stronger and stronger with more practice and will hopefully help them find that right book which turns them into avid, enthusiastic readers.
Come pick up your logs at the library and connect with books, learning and thinking at the Buda Public Library!
