School may be out, but at Negley Elementary, the art room was buzzing with activity last week. About 20 students painted, drew and glued their way to a fun time.
These budding young artists in kindergarten through fifth grade tested their skills at Art Camp, organized and taught by Art teacher Amy Ciagnero. Most students just call the teacher Miss C. or Miss Art.
“It’s easier,” she said.
The hall outside of Cigainero’s room displayed Styrofoam heads painted in bright colors, oversized paper drawings and recycled art creations. Empty boxes, shiny colored paper and duct tape featured prominently in the designs, as did a lot of creativity and ingenuity. One young man in the process of making a robotic, or perhaps bionic, arm, complete with foam fingers, paused for a photo. Another was building a larger robot. Towers and contraptions lined the floor.
During the week long camp, students got their hands, and sometimes their clothes, messy – but it was worth it. And though the class is supposed to be fun and engaging, it also teaches children to appreciate art and its history.
