Texas Author Day
The San Marcos Public Library will host more than 50 Texas authors and illustrators at the 10th annual Texas Author Day. These published writers and illustrators will sign copies of their books and chat with fans. A variety of genres will be represented including Texana, mystery, romance, science fiction & fantasy, children’s literature, poetry, and a wide variety of non-fiction. Several authors will read from or speak about their books beginning at 2:15 p.m. Books by featured writers will be available for purchase. Event takes place from 2-5 p.m. on Nov. 17 at the San Marcos Public Library; readings will take place in the library’s Large Meeting Room.
Remembering Camelot
View the private collection of John F. Kennedy’s personal photographer Jacques Lowe at the Remembering Camelot through the Lens of Jacques Lowe - the Private Collection of Frank Harvey. The evening will focus JFK, 50 years after his assassination. The event will feature a display of rare and some never-before-seen photographs captured by Lowe along with rare artifacts, a seafood buffet and keynote speakers. Tickets to the exhibit and dinner, originally $250, are now $125 thanks to an anonymous donor. The dinner and exhibit take place Nov. 16 at the San Marcos Conference Center. A unique silent auction will raise funds for True Vineyard Ministries, a local nonprofit dedicated to serving poverty-stricken Rwandan widows who were left behind after the devastating 1994 Genocide. A public showcase of the photography will be on display from noon-8 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Embassy Suites San Marcos; tickets for that showing are $25. Celebration of the People
The Native American Student Association will host the ninth annual “Celebration of the People” powwow, promoting Native American culture, history and diversity. The event will include exhibition powwow dancing, drumming, singing, flute playing, Native American arts and crafts and traditional food. Tribes represented at the powwow will include Kiowa, Lipan Apache, Comanche, Lakota, Dakota, Choctaw, Paiute, Northern Cherokee, Chickasaw, Potawatomi, Creek, Sans Arc, Caddo, Taino, Delaware, Zuni, Huron, Hawaiian and Aztec. The powwow takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 20 in the LBJ Student Center Amphitheater at Texas State University. The event is free and open to the public. Yerma
A lyrical tragedy, Yerma focuses on a childless woman living in rural Spain. Her desperate desire for motherhood becomes an obsession that eventually drives her to commit a horrific crime. Lorca’s modern masterpiece explores gender roles and the dynamics of both personal and cultural expectations and the impact they have on individuals and their relationships.
