The Lady Lobos softball team lost to the Seguin Matadors 2-5 Saturday, after being ahead 2-1 until the sixth inning.
What happened in the sixth inning? That’s when what should’ve been a gimme catch by the first baseman was dropped. That dropped ball ended up costing the Lobos four runs and subsequently the game.
The Lobo defense was firing on all cylinders and not giving up any easy runs. Angel Cruz, the starting pitcher, had 11 strikeouts and pitched the entire game.
Several times in the game, the Matadors managed to load the bases, but walked away with nothing to show for it.
At the top of the sixth inning, with two outs already on the board, and two runners on base, it looked like it would be another case of Seguin not able to convert against the Lobo defense.
The Seguin batter hit a choppy ball right at Cruz, who easily fielded it. Cruz, with plenty of time, threw the ball over to first base. The runner was still a few feet away from first, but first baseman Lauren Pizzini dropped the ball and the runner was ruled safe on first.
That’s when the momentum changed.
With the bases loaded and renewed energy, the Matadors went into full attack mode. Seguin left fielder Alyson Tovar hit a double that went just past the glove of Lehman shortstop Aleza Ruiz and into no man’s land. Seguin scored two runs off that play alone.
Seguin scored an additional two runs before Lehman third baseman Jules Hernandez caught a pop fly to close out the inning.
During their turn at bat, the Lady Lobos managed to load the bases, but they were not able to convert any runs.
The game ended with a score of Lehman 2, Seguin 5.
Lehman softball head coach Bill Holmes said, “We didn’t bring our “A” game ... we played well enough to hang in there but we had six errors which is way too many against anybody, especially Seguin.”
Next up for the Lady Lobos is Kerrville-Tivy.
