With the first week under their belts, the Hays Lady Rebels and Lehman Lady Lobos kicked off their 2013 basketball campaigns on a roll.
Hays
The Lady Rebels began the year with two straight wins. They defeated San Antonio Jefferson 62-20 on Nov. 4 followed by a 56-36 victory over Elgin on Nov. 8.
Jill Borreson and Jordyne Dugger both notched double-doubles against Jefferson. Borreson earned 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Dugger had 12 points and 10 boards as well. Freshman Jaden Williams assisted with 10 points.
The Elgin game saw Borreson contribute with 20 points and five blocks.
Head coach Danny Preuss felt the team is adjusting well to regular season speed.
“We are playing hard and in great shape,” Preuss said.
Despite some injuries, Preuss said the team’s ability to push the tempo is a plus. The club will work on offensive consistency as the season moves forward.
Hays will participate in the Southside Tournament Nov. 14-16 in San Antonio.
Lehman
At Lehman, the Lady Lobos also notched two straight wins to start the year.
On Nov. 5, Lehman toppled Smithville 78-34. Lauren Fowler led the way for Lehman with 17 points, while Roslyn Walker notched 11.
Friday saw the Lady Lobos go to Wimberley, where they defeated the Lady Texans 71-48.
Head coach Jamie Coy said the team hit the ground running.
“They have fallen right in to regular season speed [with the two wins],” she said.
Coy said the team has been able to push the floor well, along with rebounding. They will work on “paying attention to the details,” and maximizing possessions.
The Lady Lobos will travel to play Liberty Hill at 7 p.m. Friday.
