A man who police say cut a 20-year-old San Marcos resident with a knife while apparently trying to burglarize the victim’s home is on the run, and authorities are asking for the public’s help in nabbing the alleged criminal.
The victim, whom police have not identified, suffered minor knife cuts on his arm after accosting the intruder at his home at the Avalon Apartments, according to San Marcos Police Sgt. Mike Wellman.
The alleged attack happened after the victim arrived home shortly after midnight. He discovered his front door was open and saw an unknown male armed with a small knife holding a laptop computer, authorities said.
“The two struggled and the victim was cut several times on one arm,” a San Marcos Police news release said.
“The offender fled on foot in an unknown direction.”
Authorities said the victim knocked on a neighbor’s door for help, but when no one answered he ran to a nearby hotel where EMS and police were called. The victim was treated for minor cuts.
Officers investigating the crime said the victim’s apartment showed signs of forceful entry.
Police said there have been no similar crimes reported, though San Marcos recently experienced a spike in residential burglaries of single-family homes, Wellman said.
