Global Automotive Industry Supplier Opening Manufacturing Facility in San Marcos

Staff Report.

The Greater San Marcos Partnership (GSMP) today announced that Corvac Composites, LLC, one of the largest global automotive thermoform suppliers in the world, is locating a new manufacturing facility in San Marcos, Texas.

Headquartered in Byron Center, MI, Corvac will lease the 100,000 square foot former American Tire building at 2350 Clovis Barker Road, creating more than 30 jobs with an average wage of $30,000 per year and expected capital investment of $3.6 million in equipment.

Corvac’s core product line consists of wheel arch liners, under-engine covers, belly pans and underbody aero covers for automotive applications. Corvac is a product leader in providing products to make vehicles lighter and more fuel-efficient to companies such as Toyota and Honda.

“We are excited by Corvac’s decision to expand their domestic manufacturing and open their new facility in San Marcos,” said San Marcos Mayor Daniel Guerrero. “We are enthusiastic that this expansion will trigger additional interest in automotive manufacturing in our region and broaden our regional economy.”

“San Marcos and the Greater San Marcos Region have all of the key elements that companies are looking for when considering a move or expansion,” said GSMP Chairman, Will Conley. “A skilled and productive labor force, a strategic geographic location, and highway accessibility were all factors in Corvac’s site selection process and San Marcos provided them with what they required. We welcome Corvac and look forward to them becoming an integral part of our regional business community.”

The Greater San Marcos Partnership worked with the City of San Marcos and Hays County to provide Corvac with an incentives package totaling $189,000, rebating 80% of the taxes on personal property, equipment, and inventory for 10 years.

GSMP also worked with the company throughout their site search and worked with Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative on ensuring power availability to meet Corvac’s needs.

“We have had customers in the region for several years and were looking for a manufacturing facility in a location where freight costs would be greatly reduced as compared to shipping from our plants in the midwest. After investigating several possibilities, we found a property in San Marcos that best fit our needs,” said John Huber, Corvac’s vice-president of manufacturing. “Our favorable impressions of the local workforce, educational systems and quality of life have us excited to begin operations in San Marcos in 2014. The Greater San Marcos Partnership led us through the process step-by-step. Their efforts helped assure a successful outcome. The Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative also assisted in resolving concerns related to our need for substantial electric power.”

Corvac is expected to begin retrofitting the building in January 2014 and begin operations in March.
