Rebel tennis beats Lobos, loses two matches Saturday

Staff Report

District play has started for the Rebel Tennis team and it was a mixed bag of results.

The Rebels defeated the Lehman Lobos by 10-0 Sept. 24 in their first district match.

“Our teams get along and it is always a friendly rivalry,” Hays head coach Debbie Cook said.

The Rebel team then took on two district foes at home, falling to each.  On Saturday morning against Kerrville Tivy, the Rebels lost 10-5.

The afternoon match against 4th ranked Boerne-Champion was called a loss at 9-3 when weather and lightning forced the match to an early end.

The overall Rebels team record is 7-2 and its district record is 4-2.

Cook said the Rebels took the two losses in stride.

“I am proud of all my players.  We faced two tough teams on Saturday.  I told my players that sometimes we learn the most in defeat ... we will see them again and we will be ready,” she said.

Despite the losses this weekend, some of the Rebels had great matches on Saturday, Cook said. Juniors Zack Curry and Ryan New and sophomore Claudia Norman scored victories in their singles matches while Grace Ortiz and Haley Butler had a great win in doubles.

The district tournament begins Oct. 8. The draws for the district tournament will be set after this week’s play.
