$59.3 million bond package recommended to board
The Growth Impact Committee recommended to the Hays CISD Board of Trustees Monday night to move forward with a $59.3 million bond package. More than half that amount would pay for a new middle school on the east side of the interstate. The question of the need for a new high school surfaced during the discussions, according to Assistant Superintendent Carter Scherff.
He told trustees the district would need a new elementary school as well as a third full high school in the next five years. Committee member Burt Bronaugh, a former trustee, said the group of more than 20 had the opportunity to bring new ideas to the table but the committee opted to stick with the administration’s priority list. Will McManus, also a committee member, said the bond is an investment. “What are we getting out of it?” was a question he said the group tried to answer. He also said there is a lot of pain for raising taxes, but he felt none of the items on the list were “fluff.” Trustees will vote on whether to accept the impact committee’s recommendation at the Dec. 16 meeting. The board has the option to accept as is, make modifications – for example, approve a lesser amount of bond – or reject the recommendation.
