Rebel fans braved hot temperatures and imposing sunshine at Hays’ first public intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 17.
What they saw was progression under head coach Neal La Hue and his staff. However, coaches and players were resolute that more work must be done.
“It’s only our second day in pads. It was a great effort. It was about as I expected,” La Hue said. “We still have a ways to go towards execution on offense, the defense is a little ahead. I liked the effort.”
The first scrimmage of the season, held on the turf at Shelton Stadium, helped La Hue try to find a starting quarterback.
Quarterbacks Hayden Cagle and Jeff Jordan split snaps with the first team. La Hue was pleased with the effort from both players–so much so that he is still unsure who will get the starting nod. He said, “We’ll make a decision as we go.”
La Hue will continue to work with the quarterbacks. His goal is to see their progression in the new system.
“They did some great things, but they did some things we will have to coach off of the film,” he said.
While both quarterbacks battle for the starting spot, they use the opportunity to further their skills.
“We are cheering each other on, trying to push each other and make each other better,” Cagle said.
He believes progression at quarterback is key, as it helps build a team mentality on offense. {newaccess:17}
