After an exemplary year on the pitch, 55 athletes from the Hays and Lehman boys and girls soccer teams were named to the 2013 49-4A Boys and Girls All-District teams, announced last week. With all four HCISD programs participating in postseason play, local athletes dominated the All-District teams.
On the boys side, 27 players were named to the All-District team, with Lehman senior forward Eli Guajardo being tabbed as the Overall Most Valuable Player. Guajardo, who scored 26 goals on the season, helped the Lobos finish with a program best 19-2-1 record and the school’s first team district championship. “Eli provided great balance up top with (freshman forward Diego Garcia),” said head coach Jay Sansom, who earned Coach of the Year honors in 49-4A. “He was a very unselfish player that was fun to watch. That is why he was a huge asset and will be missed.”
Other outstanding honorees are Lehman’s Diego Garcia as the Offensive Player of the Year, Hays’ Will Cooper as Goalkeeper of the Year and Hays’ Kevin Mendoza as Utility Player of the Year.
A total of 28 Lady Lobos and Lady Rebels were also named to the All-District list. Lehman junior Forward Mariah Tamayo was named as the Overall Most Valuable Player, while Hays senior Savannah Derrick garnered the Utility Player of the Year honor. Additionally, a total of 14 athletes from Hays and Lehman were named to the Girls All-District Academic Team. Athletes must maintain a 90 or higher average for the third or fourth six-weeks period to earn placement on the list.
