Looking ahead in Hays CISD football: Hays vs. Seguin, Lehman vs. Kerrville

Hays (5-2, 3-1) vs. Seguin (3-4, 0-4)

When: Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Matador Stadium (1315 E. Cedar St., Seguin, TX)

Last week: Hays def. Schertz Clemens 38-28; Lehman def. Seguin 24-21

Last meeting (2012): Hays def. Seguin 44-23

Hays offense: Multiple

Hays defense: 3-4

Seguin offense: Multiple

Seguin defense: 4-3

Players to watch:

Hays: QB Jeff Jordan, QB/WR Hayden Cagle, RB Dylan Kasper, RB Cody Gandy, WR Luke Park, FB Holton Dickerson, WR Ty Goebler TE Banner Steele, DL Cole Carney, DL Justin Diaz, LB Hector (Trey) Solis, DB Emory Cuzze, DB Jared Self, DB Mason Salinas

Seguin: Seguin: QB Walker Franz, RB Colton Applewhite, RB Joe Baker, WR Henry Young, QB/WR Sheldon Whitson, WR Geovani Watson, RB/DB Trevor Kilcrease, TE/LB Emilio Light

Intangibles: Friday’s game against Seguin has the makings of a trap game: on the road, against an opponent winless in district, with bigger games on the horizon. The Rebels must focus to avoid an upset. Hays will utilize its run attack, bolstered by the play of RB Gandy and Kasper. FB Dickerson adds a new dimension. Add that to the play of QB Jordan and WR Parks, and the Rebel run game should thrive. Hays’ pass game also opened up, with the emergence of TE Steele, which may take pressure off of Park. On defense, Hays will have to account for QB/WR Whitson and Young, both of whom could fill in for QB Franz. Both of their run capabilities outweigh their passing attacks – a boon for a stout Rebel run defense. Head coach Neal LaHue said the team will make plans if Franz plays. Still, the Rebels will need to work on their pass defense. They allowed 429 yards and four touchdowns to Clemens last week. Ultimately, the Rebels should prove to be too much for Seguin to handle – provided they are focused. Winning the turnover battle will be key as well. Hays has done well on that front recently, and must continue to do so.

Lehman (2-5, 1-3) vs. Kerrville Tivy (3-4, 2-2)

When: Friday Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Antler Stadium (1310 Sidney Baker St., Kerrville, TX)

Last week: Lehman def. Seguin 24-21; Kerrville Tivy def. Alamo Heights 32-28

Last meeting (2012): Tivy def. Lehman 62-7

Lehman offense: Multiple

Lehman defense: 4-3

Tivy offense: Spread

Tivy defense: 4-3

Players to watch:

Lehman: QB Jeremy Schilhab, RB Paul Brown, WR/LB Tyler Hyss, WR/DB John Herrera, OL/DL Derick Chavarria, OL/DL Andrew Davila, WR/DB Malcolm Turner, WR/DB Kelton Powell

Tivy: QB Cade Dyal, RB Adrian Medran, RB William Randal, QB Bailey McKinney, WR Tyler Ahrens, WR Glenn White, DB Josh Appel, DL Isaiah Rice, DL Sebastion Rodriguez, LB Brendan Scheidle

Intangibles: It’s safe to say the Lobo offense has finally found its legs – literally. Their three-pronged run attack, headed by QB Schilhab, helped the Lobos keep their hopes of a playoff berth mathematically alive last week. They must work hard to ensure they keep the consistency going against an up-and-coming Tivy team. The help of WR/RB Hyss and RB Brown has refreshed the Lobo run game, which has tallied 579 yards over the past two contests. Tivy’s run defense will challenge them, however, as they have given up an average of only 143 yards in four district games. Utilization of the pass game will be necessary for the Lobos – even just a little bit. Defense once again will be the focus. Lehman will be tasked with halting RB Medran, who has been the workhorse for the Antlers this season. The addition of QB Dyal, who has thrown for more than 500 yards in three starts, will give the Lobos a new element to stop. Effort is no longer the issue for the Lobos – depth may be. So long as the Lobos stay healthy, they will give Tivy a strong fight. The team knows they must win out, and get some help, to keep playoff chances alive.
