Repeat family violence offender handed max sentence

Stephen Hollar

by Andy Sevilla

Two charges of family violence assaults landed a San Marcos man in prison for 20 years after a Hays County jury found him guilty as a repeat offender.

Stephen Hollar, 57, has been arrested at least 23 times with charges ranging from criminal trespassing, stalking and child abandonment to evading arrest, DWI, assault and terror threats, according to Hays County records.

Evidence at Hollar’s assault-family violence-repeat offender case showed that the suspect’s history of committing acts of family violence extended back to the 1990s, Hays County District Attorney officials said.

Hollar’s first Hays County arrest dates back to Oct. 12, 1995 for two charges of criminal trespass and a public intoxication charge. He was released later that day, jail records show.

On the family violence side, Hollar was first arrested in Hays County on that charge on Sept. 6, 1996, where he was also charged with making a terror threat; he was released later that day, jail records show.

Hollar has been arrested and charged with family violence assault at least eight times in Hays County, with his latest on Feb. 27, 2012, for which he was indicted on Sept. 21, 2012, jail records show.

Hollar has been in Hays County custody since his Sept. 2012 indictment was handed down.

Hays County’s District Attorney’s Family Justice Division handled Hollar’s family violence case and Assistant District Attorneys Amy Lockhart and Cathy Compton prosecuted the case, convincing jurors to hand down the maximum prison sentence allowed.

Hollar’s defense attorney, Willard Holgate, did not return a call for comment.
