Mt. City is for the birds – and other wildlife

Deer suddenly started visiting our backyard recently, which stirred concern after the battle injuries in the past to two of our dachshunds. The birdbaths we’ve kept empty were filled with rain. Let’s see if the deer will stay out with the basins turned upside down.

Leslie Burich rescued Diane Krejci and little Luci with a ride home one day when a doe took postures that stirred concern, right here on the streets of Mountain City.

Leslie, across the street from us, sees a mother screech owl and one baby sitting on the rim of their front yard “Owl Shack” (www.owlshack.com). Perhaps those are the ones we saw on our driveway a few weeks back.

One evening I heard the biggest racket by mockingbirds across the fence in the Koehn’s backyard. I expected to see a snake in the tree. The birds were trying to spook a little screech owl. Even when one pecked, the owl just sat there still as could be.

The Tarrs have a screech owl nesting in their backyard “squirell” box (again). And, they’ve seen just one owlet.

Someone in Mountain City hosted a nesting pair of ash-throated flycatchers. A fledgling hopped off to the side of Live Oak Drive. A pair looked at our nestboxes and passed them over. There’s still time for nestings this year, especially in shaded and well-ventilated nestboxes.

A gigantic skunk has been hanging around between Maple and Live Oak and the water well.

The Tarrs are hosting the Fellowship Church’s Backyard Bible Club in their front yard this week.

Fellowship Church at Plum Creek moves into the new building on Grace Street, near the intersection of 2700 and Kohler’s Crossing on June 16, Father’s Day. Worship Service start times will be 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sundays.

Loving Mountain City expresses many thanks to neighbors who donated baked goodies for the Bake Sale on Garage Sale Saturday: Beth Smith, Betty Puckett, Sally Kachoris, Christi Chabarria, Karlyn Ellis, Laura Gresham Craig, Amy Hilton and Pauline Tom. And many thanks to those who stopped by to make a tasty purchase. And thanks to Marjie Kelly who anchored the project and manned the booth.

Loving Mountain City raised $51.25 in just a couple of hours to benefit Mountain City events! The remaining cookies, cupcakes, and brownies went to the Kyle VFD.

Did you miss the garage sale? It’s always the first Saturday in June.

Dumpster Days falls June 22 and 23. It’s made possible with city tax dollars, so it’s only available to Mountain City citizens. Come prepared to show proof of residency. Oh, the benefits of living in this little city still somewhat out in the country.

For a closer look this week at nature in Mountain City, my eyes fell upon the lovely little Pearl Milkweed Vine that’s becoming established just off our back deck. It captured my interest out on some undeveloped years a few years back, with heart-shaped leaves and a star-shaped flower with a delicate little pearl positioned right in the center. Some of the attempts I made at transplanting or rooting three years ago have just this year come to fruition.

You know, I bet some readers have thought for three years or longer about submitting a tidbit. Now would be a good time for tidbit fruition.
