Raiders trounce Lobos in opener

By Keff Ciardello

The Lehman Lobos (0-1) opened their 2013 season on a bad note, getting trounced by the Cedar Ridge Raiders (1-0), 49-7, at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Austin.

After the Raiders scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, the Lobos answered early in the second quarter with a solid drive that led to Paul Brown punching it in from one yard out.

Running was Lehman’s biggest strength throughout the game and especially on that drive in which Paul Matthews had two big runs of 12 and 18 yards to set up Brown’s touchdown.  Brown finished the game with 12 rushes for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Matthews had three rushes for 31 yards and Jeremy Schilhab added 44 yards off 11 rushes.  Schilhab finished 8-18 passing for 49 yards and one interception.

Cedar Ridge scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half to cap their defeat of Lehman.

Michael McCann threw for 293 yards and earned five touchdowns for the Raiders. Three of his touchdown passes went to Charles Porter who opened the game with a 55 yard touchdown on the Raiders opening drive.

McCann’s other two touchdown passes were caught by Reed Mitteness who finished the game with five catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.

Porter had seven catches for 156 yards and three touchdowns.

Nicholas Morello took the bulk of the runs for Cedar Ridge with 10 rushes for 43 yards and a score but it was Marcus Friar that led the Raiders in rushing yards. On his lone attempt towards the end of the fourth quarter, Friar bolted down the middle of the field for a 51-yard touchdown.

The Lobos look to bounce back when they take on the Elgin Wildcats at home this Friday night at Shelton Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
