Marilyn Beasley, a member of San Marcos’ Moon-McGehee Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, shares artifacts of Texas history with fourth-grade students at Blanco Vista Elementary.
The traveling history trunk includes clothing, tools, games and more, and is on loan to the school for several weeks. DRT presents the trunk and offers a history lesson to correspond with fourth-grade and seventh-grade Texas history lessons. The guidelines and teacher lesson plans were written by the History Department at The Alamo. The group also sponsors an essay contest each year for fourth and seventh graders, as well as an art contest for all ages. Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a nonprofit group, must prove their heritage; each member must be a direct descendant of someone who lived in Texas prior to February 19, 1846. The chapter was named after William Moon and Thomas Gilmer McGehee who were early settlers of San Marcos.
