African delegation visits city of Kyle: Kyle Mayor discusses challenges of democratic leadership, local politics

SUBMITTED REPORT

Kyle Mayor Lucy Johnson hosted a delegation of young African leaders at the Kyle City Hall this month to discuss the challenges and rewards of democracy. The delegates were part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program and represented the countries of Ghana, Lesotho, Liberia, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.

“I’m so proud to be able to represent the City of Kyle and pass along our city’s history and heritage to people of other cultures,” said Johnson. “Being able to hear about how these young leaders are planning to address the challenges in their growing democracies and how they will use the information they have gathered during their visit to further that cause is very invigorating to me and I hope to pass that along to others in our community.”

Topics discussed during the two-hour meeting included: the structure of Kyle’s municipal government, local political processes, requirements for holding public office, what it’s like being a mayor in Texas, how the city communicates with the county, state, and federal government, challenges of being a young office holder, motivating youth involvement in government, and the infrastructure needs of rapidly growing communities. The meeting occurred on Friday, Nov. 2 and included a tour of Kyle’s City Hall. The delegates also visited other area governments, including an Austin City Council meeting and the Travis County Elections offices.

The International Visit Leadership Program is designed to educate young leaders from across the globe on democracy, citizen participation in government, the diversity of public perspectives in American government, and youth involvement in politics. The city of Kyle has now hosted four foreign delegations  from 10 countries.
