Buda man surrenders maimed fighting roosters

A Buda man has voluntarily surrendered 41 chickens and roosters seized from his home on Earl Street south of downtown.

The birds were seized Tuesday evening after an animal control officer found several maimed roosters on the property, according to Buda Municipal Judge Beth Smith, who ordered the seizure.

"There were obvious traumatic injuries to many of the fowl," she said.

A Thursday hearing to determine whether the birds would be permanently seized was canceled after the owner voluntarily relinquished them. The owner had not been arrested Tuesday evening.

"I heard all the roosters but had no idea anything strange was going on back there," neighbor Irene Mercadotold KVUE, which aired this video:
