4-H announces Gold Star awards

STAFF REPORT

The 4-H Hays County Gold Star Awards were presented to Mikayla Wenzel, 17, of Buda, and Rachel McDaniel, 16, of San Marcos.

Mikayla has been involved in the Buda 4-H Club for four years on goat, sheep and public speaking projects. Her parents are Will and Rhonda Covarrubias of Buda. Mikayla said she was thrilled to be part of the winning Natural Resources Educational Presentation at this year’s Texas 4-H Roundup.

“4-H has offered me many learning opportunities: time management, leadership, friendship, responsibility, ownership, pride, public speaking, showmanship skills, sportsmanship and respect – all valuable life skills.”

Rachel is the 16-year-old daughter of Randy and Dawn McDaniel of San Marcos. She has been a member of the Wimberley 4-H Club for six years, and enjoys her clothing, food and dog projects.

She is proud to have represented Hays County at the Texas 4-H Fashion Show for the last two years, placing 1st in 2012.

“My most meaningful community service project is making pillows to comfort children who are admitted to the San Marcos Youth Shelter,” Rachel said.

State Rep. Jason Isaac presented their awards at the 4-H Annual Awards night on Aug. 6 at the Wimberley VFW Hall.
