Kyle Fire Department hosts Open House this Saturday
Come check out the Kyle Fire Department Station 1! From 11 a.m.-4 p.m. this Saturday, tour the fire station, climb inside trucks, learn fire safety tips, visit vendors, dunk a firefighter, donate to the blood drive, enjoy hot dogs and a bake sale, and take a 10-min CPR training.


 


San Marcos fire department to host open house Saturday
Fire Station No. 5 in San Marcos is holding an open house to mark the start of Fire Prevention Month. Clowns, hot dogs and fire safety demonstrations are among the planned festivities. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to explore fire apparatus and a rescue helicopter and take fire truck rides. The event is from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at 100 Carlson Circle.


 


Boo at the Zoo
The zoo at night? That might be strange, except when it’s Boo at the Zoo! The Austin Zoo once again hosts its annual family Halloween event. Kids, wear your favorite costumes, bring a flashlight and get set for an evening of fun and spookiness. In addition to viewing the animals, you can ride the haunted train, step into the new Haunted Witch’s Castle and enjoy performance by a dance troupe. There’s also a pumpkin patch to explore. Parents, get advance tickets - the train rides sell out quickly. Boo at the Zoo runs from 6:30-9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays beginning Oct. 12 and running through Oct. 27. The zoo is located at 10808 Rawhide Trail.

Children’s author Jan Brett coming to San Marcos Hastings
Children’s author and illustrator Jan Brett gets inspired by her love of the natural world. Her most recent release is Mossy, a quiet love story about two turtles. Brett wrote the book after finding a turtle in the wetlands behind her house. This New York Times #1 bestselling artist/author will do an art demonstration and book signing from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 14 at Hastings in San Marcos.


 


Book Sale at San Marcos Library
Get the best deals in town on gently-used books at the Friends of the San Marcos Public Library’s Fall Used Book Sale. On Friday paperback books are $1 and hardcover books are $2. Saturday prices are 50¢ for paperbacks and $1 for hardbacks. On Sunday, you can take a whole bag full of books for just $5.  All proceeds from the sale benefit the San Marcos Public Library. This semi-annual sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 12-14 at the San Marcos City Park Rec Hall.


 


Quinceañera planning workshop
Steve Valdez will offer a two-hour workshop on how to plan a Quinceañera, a celebration for a girl’s fifteenth birthday that is considered a rite of passage in Latin American cultures. The workshop will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at the San Marcos Public Library. This fun, informative lesson, based on Valdez’s book “Quinceañera Planner: Debut of a Princess,” covers all the basics of planning the party of a lifetime, from picking out dresses to transportation methods. Everyone is welcome to attend this free Quinceañera Planning Workshop.
