STAFF REPORT

Three local students from San Marcos Academy received promotions within the JROTC program at a Parent Day ceremony last month.

Daniel Sexton, a senior from Buda, was promoted to the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel. Daniel is the Battalion Commander and is the son of Michael and Susan Sexton.

Richard Smith, a senior from Kyle, was promoted to Cadet 1st Lieutenant. Smith is Alpha Company’s Second Platoon Leader and is the son of Roger Smith and Christie Smith.

Also promoted to Cadet 1st Lieutenant was senior Austin Hay of Kyle. Hay is the Bravo Company Executive Officer and is the son of Ryan and Melanie Hay.

The Academy’s JROTC program was launched 95 years ago. Although a volunteer program, the Bear Battalion draws about one-third of all students at the Academy. This past fall, the battalion was named an honor unit with distinction, which is awarded to only about 10 percent of all JROTC units in the nation in any given year.
