Hays Free Press has new editor

STAFF REPORT

The Hays Free Press has a new editor with the return of former editor Veronica Gordon. Gordon stepped into the newsroom’s top job this week.

Under one name or another, the Hays Free Press has been serving readers in the Kyle and Buda areas for more than 100 years.

Gordon, who recently moved from Austin and married Hays Free Press Sports Editor Jason Gordon in December, said she’s looking forward to getting back to her journalism roots.

In 1999, Gordon, then Garcia, began her professional career with Barton Publications as editor of the San Marcos Free Press. Gordon worked for the Free Press until 2001. Since that time, she made stops at the San Marcos Daily Record and the Seguin Gazette-Enterprise before heading to Austin to work at the Capitol as a proofreader for the Texas Legislative Council. She also worked in the marketing and communications departments at Texas Mutual Insurance Company and Linebarger Goggan.

“I’m excited to come back to the Free Press and I look forward to being a part of its proud tradition of local journalism,” she said. “This opportunity allows me to work closer to home and family.”

Her primary responsibility is ensuring relevant and accurate coverage of local news that matters most to readers in Kyle, Buda and the surrounding areas.

“So much has changed since 2001, but the Free Press is still an important part of this community,” she said. “Kyle and Buda residents look to us for information that larger newspapers miss. I’m also excited about reaching our Spanish-speaking readers with the addition of La Prensa Libre de Hays.

Gordon replaces outgoing editor Wes Ferguson, who has launched a magazine with San Marcos Mercury editor Brad Rollins. Ferguson will continue to report on local sports for the Hays Free Press.

Gordon earned her journalism degree from Texas State University, where she was the first Hispanic female editor of The University Star.

Readers with story ideas, questions or suggestions may write to Gordon at [email protected]. They also may call her at 512-268-7862.
