“Into the Woods”
An ambivalent Cinderella? A bloodthirsty Little Red Ridinghood?A Witch...who raps? They’re among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured send-up of classic fairy tales. When a baker and his wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door, their quest to break the spell has them lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (as in, beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted, but there are consequences…. What begins as a lively, irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. Through Sunday, Nov.18. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. nightly and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the University Mainstage Theatre at Texas State University.
